6 Ways to save fuel and achieve higher mileage

While you can’t really do anything about fuel prices in Pakistan, you may make some changes to how you drive that will help you reduce your fuel consumption.

One of the biggest troubles car owners face in this country is how to make the most out of a full tank of fuel. With harsh road conditions, heavy traffic, frequent fluctuations in fuel and diesel prices, and the excise duty, saving money on fuel can be difficult. But it’s not entirely impossible. Here are some nifty tips to improve mileage.

1۔ Keeping a safe distance from vehicles in front

If you tail a vehicle too closely, then you tend to slam the brakes abruptly, which brings your car to a screeching halt. This means, when you start moving again, you’ll pump more fuel into the car engine.

Keep an effective distance from the automobile before you and that means you can primarily just coast along it. The moment they speed up, you’ll simply need to gently step on the accelerator to maintain or increase speed a little. This really is a more fuel-efficient way to drive.

2۔ Drive your car as biking uphill

Think about biking to understand fuel efficiency when going uphill. Elevated pedaling become easier when you move gear to lower gears this way you’ll put lesser effort as you rise. The exact same principle applies while driving. Sacrifice some speediness and move to a lower gear, which means you are not forcing your vehicle to expend a great deal of petrol during high-load situations.

3۔ Save fuel with a little focus on tires

Car manufacturer recommends certain air pressure for car tires. Manufacturers generally recommend that car tyres should be pumped with 30-32 PSI.

This might make your ride a bit rougher, but correct tyre pressures reduce road resistance. Reduced road resistance helps in saving some energy. With lower resistance, you achieve higher mileage as lesser engine power is required to move.

4۔ Skip the gear where needed

Sometimes the engine is revving at high RPMs, Engine consumes higher fuel when RPMs go higher. Whenever you feel that you can change the gear to a higher gear skipping one number up change it. This will save you a lot of money in the long run.

5۔ RPM / Engine Revs = Your Wallet

You might like the sound of engine Revs but putting acceleration pedal to the floor drains two of very important resource i) your fuel tank and ii) your wallet. Whether Car is stationary or cruising at high speed on a highway, the over-revving car engine will result in higher fuel consumption.

Shift to a higher gear before gauge reaches maximum RPM. This is another useful tip to save fuel.

6۔ Saving fuel after a complete stop

Whenever you have to stop your car e.g. at an intersection, and the traffic light turns green, your inclination might be to speed up as much as possible to make up for time lost at the intersection.

Nevertheless, flooring the pedal and changing gear only after you reach the redline causes huge fuel consumptions. For higher fuel efficiency move slowly after a complete stop and time your gear shift before the engine starts screaming.
